Why Do I Text Thee?

I love texting. I detest talking on the phone. Why is that? Because of some of the assignments in one of the communication classes I'm taking, I’ve been thinking about this lately.

When my brothers and I were kids, anytime the phone rang, we all shouted “I’LL GET IT!!” and ran to the phone as fast as we could so we could be the first to answer it because of course the call was for ME.

Now, though, anytime my phone rings, the first thing I do is roll my eyes. No matter who it is (no offense, Mom).

Thanks to some eye-opening books from my communication classes, I think I’ve finally figured out why I prefer texting: talking on the phone is HARD. Talking on the phone means I have to engage with the person on the other end, and that takes time. It takes much more time than to just pop off a quick text.

So, now I know, and I’m making an effort not to glare at the phone when it rings. And when I talk on the phone, usually with my mom or my older brother, I resolve to stop holding the phone away from my ear and sticking my tongue out at it when we’ve been talking for more than five minutes.

Ok, so I resolve to try to stop doing that. Change is hard.
